In myth, Theia is a Titan: consort of Hyperion, mother of Helios and Selene. She is the one who gives things their shine, which is why the Greeks invoked her over gold and silver rather than over the sun she bore.

In planetary science, Theia is the world that hit the young Earth. Nothing of her survived as a world. The Moon is the part that got away.

So the name arrives twice, and the two stories disagree. One makes her Hyperion's equal and consort. The other makes her the thing that broke off and became something in its own right.
